Background of problem

The swift development of Internet changed the nature of communication. The new media abolished the difference between possibilities of medium broadcasters and medium users. And they made it much easier for everyone to become a medium broadcaster by oneself.

Contemporary open source software is another invention that caused a boost of new media. It becomes easier and easier not just to create a simple personal page, but a website that would not yield to the one created by professionals.

Such new media elements as blogs give everyone an opportunity to publish facts, comments, opinions that might be alternative to what is published in classic media.

Total number of bloggers from Kyrgyzstan on LiveJournal.com, Kloop.kg and Diesel.Elcat.kg: there are around 700 Kyrgyz-based blogs registered in these three platforms, with only around 15 per cent of them being active.

With around 400,000 people visiting Internet regularly in Kyrgyzstan, the number of blogging-related and new media-related people in the country is evidently low.

 Solution

BarCamp Central Asia 2008 will promote democratic processes by improving blogging, social networking and other new media-related activities in Kyrgyzstan.

BarCamp will help Internet leaders and active social members with similar goals to establish strong interrelations.

The experience of previous BarCamps shows that this format is optimal to gather sponsors, professionals and amateurs of new media in one place. With an informal atmosphere of the event, it is much easier to establish new partnership relations on any level.

Financial support is needed for:

  • Transportation for foreign participants (chosen by us) or guest speakers (offered by you). Transportation for foreign participants is the main part of our budget. Our task is to create a platform for experience exchange. Therefore, success of our event depends on the quantity of foreign participants.
  • Internet (Wi‐Fi). Internet is needed for organization process, during the BarCamp itself, and after the event for technical assistance for NGO’s.
  • Exclusive t‐shirts with BarCamp logo and list of sponsors for participants
  • Other costs (stationery, handouts, coffee break, etc.)

We will be very glad to hear any other proposals on behalf of your organization.
